Do away with bulky surround sound speaker systems while still bringing your movies and music to life with the Yamaha YSP-800 digital sound projector. Housed in a single bar-shaped body but equipped with 23 speaker drivers–each with its own digital amplifier–the YSP-800 delivers full-bodied, multichannel sound through a single elegant component. The device works by focusing the sound into “beams,” and then projecting them at optical angles into the room via the analytical IntelliBeam function. At the same time, the YSP-800 controls the driver delay times and optimizes the level and frequency response of each beam. The resulting sound waves–both direct and reflected–create a soundscape that seems to be coming from speakers placed throughout the room, but in reality is playing through the digital sound projector.

The YSP-800 isn’t just about sound, though. Its slim, contemporary design is also wildly convenient, as listeners no longer have to find complementary locations for five satellite speakers and a subwoofer, nor do they have to fuss with extra-long speaker cables running all through the house. Rather, listeners can place the YSP-800 next to or on top of their video display, or they can purchase an optional wall-mount bracket and hang it securely on the wall. The latter option is particularly handy for owners of moderate-sized flat-panel TVs and monitors, as it both saves space and visually complements the display. The projector is even versatile enough to work in corners or other unusual room configurations.

The projector’s versatility extends to its variety of sound modes, which include a five-beam mode, a three-beam mode, a stereo mode, a stereo + three-beam mode, and a target mode. Each mode produces a unique effect that varies depending on the shape of the room, the orientation of the projector, and other factors. Meanwhile, a subtle blue LCD on the projector’s base keeps listeners informed of the current surround setting and volume level.

Listeners will also dig the YSP-800’s built-in 82-watt digital amplifier, which connects directly to A/V components. The amp offers a host of valuable features, including Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 decoding and a trio of Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP) programs (Movie, Music, and Sports). Connectivity stems from the three digital audio inputs (one coaxial and two optical) and two analog audio RCA inputs. The device also offers a subwoofer output terminal for listeners who want to enjoy a more robust bass performance.

The YSP-800, which is outfitted with twenty-one 1.62-inch tweeter/midrange drivers and a pair of 3.94-inch woofers, measures 31.5 by 6 by 4.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

  • There are only 4 possible reasons to buy this system or anything else like it:

    1. Absolute aversion to dealing with a bunch of speaker wires.

    2. Absolute need to have as few black boxes in your living room as possible.

    3. Absolute inability/unwillingness to learn how to use a real home theater receiver.

    4. Absolute inability/unwillingness to divorce a spouse with #1, #2, and/or #3.

For eight hundred bucks you can actually get a much better home theater setup that would blow this thing clear out of the water: a Panasonic sa-xr55 digital receiver for around two hundred fifty, a Dayton 12″ subwoofer for around a hundred fifty shipped from partsexpress dot com, and 5 Athena speakers (2 pairs of AS-B1.2s and 1 AS-C1.2) from audioadvisor dot com for three hundred and eighty. And no, you would NOT need a bare/minimalist room to get the full surround effect that this Yamaha soundbar requires (not that it even does get much of a true “surround” effect even under those conditions).

That’s just one of many much better alternatives for the same price range. Ask around on various online audio forums/discussion boards such as AVS Forum, Hometheaterforum dot com, Ecoustics dot com, etc.

Having said that, these Yamaha soundbars are still nowhere as much a flaming rip-off as any of those God-awful Bose systems.

  • When I look at the this product, It is a fantastic.

It is so simple and looks good and It’s a great idea.

I loved that. I have watched dvd every night since I bought this. It is so good, but my living room has some obstacle for sound. I don’t feel purfect, but so far so good.

Try to clean up your area for sound.

  • I have a perfectly symmetrical room, and it kicks. Just add water (powered woofer). I am super pleased. Great remote, easy/intuitive setup and super clear sound.

Example: LOTR: Fellowship of the ring. When Gandalph knocks on bilbo’s door it sounds like it’s my my door. My cat runs to the front door.

Not as good as having speakers behind you, but for what it is it really is awesome. I didn’t want speaker clutter and to run wires. Enjoy!

  • I agree with other reviewers about this product. If you are absolutely pathetic with technology or hate having cords all over the place, this product is for you. It will replicate various surround sound settings. The system sounds better when watching DVDs. The audio portion is so-so when listening to CDs. I have a matching Yamaha subwoofer, but it’s basically for an apartment room setup. My old $400 JBL HTIB still blows this system away.

Update: I’ve had this unit for about a year now. It hasn’t failed me so reliability is good. It’s $150 cheaper now than when I got it last year so it could be a bargain. I just don’t think it’s worth all the hype that other reviewers have posted here.

  • I bought this product based on the reviews here and on other sites, and unfortunately it’s not working that well for me. Problem is that my room is basically a long rectangle, and the tv and sound bar are set up in the corner. The way my room in configured, I get no surround type sound. Basically I’m stuck with a Stereo + 3 Beam configuration. The sound is not bad, better then my tv, but it’s just not worth the money in my situation. However, if you have the right configuration I would definitely recommend.

PS. YSP-800 and YSP-900 are the exactly same bars! The only difference is that the YSP-900 supports DTS:Neo6 format, that’s it. Everything else is exactly the same. From the DVD’s I’ve watched so far, only 2 had that format available, in addition to Dolby Digital which YSP-800 supports. Considering the price difference between the two, YSP-800 is a no brainer.
